It all depends on the type of touring ride you have planned! If you’re going to bike and camp for a few days or one to two weeks, the equipment isn’t as crucial, especially if your bike trip mostly passes through cities or towns.

It also depends on your finances and budget. If you’re planning to be away longer and pass through areas where there are long stretches between larger communities, it’s really a good idea to invest in the best possible touring bike, tent, and bags.

The bike I have, the Surly Long Haul Trucker, I’ve had for eight years, and it works well. If there were ever issues with the bike, there are usually resourceful and clever people who can fix the problems. Don’t let your finances prevent you from embarking on the adventure of a lifetime just because you can’t afford the ”top-of-the-line bike.”
